TUNING IN AND OUT IN A KUNDALINI YOGA CLASS

A Kundalini Yoga class is a sacred space in which we explore, uplift and empower our bodies, minds and spirits. There are specific mantras (sacred words) that we use to open and close this sacred space.

Here is a short but comprehensive description of the mantras we use to tune in and out in a Kundalini Yoga class.

TUNING IN

ONG NAMO GURU DEV NAMO (Called the Adi Mantra – Primal Mantra)

Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo

I bow to the subtle divine wisdom/cosmic creative energy. I bow to the divine teacher within.

  • Adi means primal or first. In Kundalini yoga, this is the first mantra we use to open the space before for any yogic or meditative practice. It is used to relate instantly to our higher self and divine teacher within to spiritually guide both the teacher and the students during the class.
  • The Adi Mantra links us to the Golden Chain, the energetic link that exists between teachers, their teacher, their teacher’s teacher and so on back into history. When Kundalini Yoga teachers teach, the first thing they do is to connect with the Golden Chain and invite its wisdom to teach through them. Essentially, this sacred mantra opens us to our spiritual channel.

HOW TO CHANT:

  • Sit in easy pose, or any meditation posture that you find most comfortable, with a straight spine, chin in and the palms together in Prayer Mudra at the Heart Center: fingers pointing up at 60ΒΊ, base of thumbs pressing against the sternum.
  • Inhale deeply and chant β€œONG NAMO”. Ong is vibrated in the forehead and nasal passages to stimulate the pituitary and pineal glands, which automatically tunes us into higher consciousness. ONG is long, NA is short, MO is extended. To chant β€œGURU DEV NAMO”, GU and RU are short. DEV is extended and chanted at a higher tone. NA is short. And MO finishes up the breath.
  • This mantra is chanted focusing at the 3rd Eye Point and in one deep breath. If you need to you can take a little sip of air after Ong Namo.
  • Repeat three times.

AAD GURAY NAMEH (Called the Mangala Charan Mantra – Mantra for a Lucky Life)

Aad Guray Nameh,

Jugaad Guray Nameh,

Sat Guray Nameh,

Siri Guroo Dayvay Nameh

I bow to the primal Guru/Wisdom

I bow to the Wisdom that has existed throughout the ages

I bow to True Wisdom

I bow to the Great Divine Wisdom

  • This is a mantra of protection and it is recited to invoke the protective energy of the infinite divine Wisdom.
  • It removes fears and doubts.

HOW TO CHANT:

  • After chanting the Adi Mantra, keep the pose and keep focusing at the third eye.
  • Chant the mantra in one breath keeping a steady pace. Repeat three times.

TUNING OUT

MAY THE LONG TIME SUN SHINE UPON YOU, ALL LOVE SURROUND YOU, AND THE PURE LIGHT WITHIN YOU, GUIDE YOUR WAY ON.

  • This blessing song is chanted two times to close a Kundalini Yoga class, sometimes longer and once is ok too. Some teachers do not chant this at the end of class. It opens up a path of love, light and inner guidance for our lives.

  • Chant from the heart.

SAT NAM

Sat Nam -Truth is my Identity/Name

  • Sat Nam is our true identity, the infinite potential within us, the divine in us.
  • We use this mantra to tune out of a Kundalini Yoga practice to affirm our identity as living truth.
  • It is a bij (or seed) mantra. Within the seed is contained all the knowledge of the fully-grown tree. The essence/seed is the identity of truth embodied in condensed form. Chanting this mantra awakens the soul and gives us our destiny.

HOW TO CHANT:

  • After chanting the Long Time Sun keep the same pose and focus at the Third Eye.
  • Inhale deeply and chant SAT NAM. SAT is eight times longer than NAM. While chanting SAT visualize the energy rising up the spine and with NAM project the sound out of the crown chakra towards infinity.
  • Repeat three times.
