There is a particular kind of magick in the air when the Wheel begins to turn toward Autumn.
The light softens into gold. Shadows stretch a little longer across the Earth. The evenings begin stealing precious minutes from the day. Leaves surrender their summer green, transforming into shades of amber, crimson, and gold.
And somewhere beneath the hum of everyday life, Mama Earth leans close and whispersβ¦
Slow down, Witch. The season is changing.
Here we are at Mabon, the Autumn Equinox, that sacred threshold where light and darkness meet.
This year, the Autumn Equinox arrives onTuesday, September 22, when day and night stand in near balance. For a beautiful moment, neither light nor darkness needs to conquer the other. They simply exist together, each holding its rightful place in the great turning of the Wheel.
And there is some powerful witchy medicine in that.
Mabon is one of the eight sabbats celebrated on the modern Wheel of the Year, often known as the Second Harvest. While the name Mabon is relatively modern, inspired by Mabon ap Modron of Welsh mythology, the ancient practice of honoring the harvest and preparing for the darker half of the year reaches far beyond any modern calendar.
Long before our ancestors marked the seasons with dates and names, they watched the Earth.
They followed the changing light. They gathered what had grown. They filled their homes with the gifts of the land and offered their gratitude for everything that would sustain them through the months ahead.
And they understood something we, in our busy modern lives, sometimes forgetβ¦
The darkness is part of the cycle, too.
Mabon invites us to pause at the threshold between light and shadow and gently ask ourselves:
What am I ready to release?
What has completed its purpose in my life?
What am I carrying that no longer belongs to the season I am entering?
The trees seem to understand this ancient wisdom better than we do.
They do not cling to their leaves when the time comes to let go. Instead, they offer us one final, breathtaking display of color before surrendering to the season ahead.
They do not force themselves to remain in summer.
They release what is finished.
They stand bare and unafraid.
And perhaps that is one of Autumn's greatest spellsβ¦
To let go. To return to yourself. To become still.
As the nights grow longer, we begin our journey toward the quieter half of the year. A season of introspection. A season of deeper listening. A season when the world outside seems to soften, inviting us to turn inward and hear the whispers of our own spirit.
There is nothing empty about the darkness.
It is sacred.
It is where roots deepen, where seeds rest, where dreams gather beneath the soil, and where wisdom waits patiently for the right moment to rise.
The darkness is not the absence of life.
It is the place where life prepares to begin again.
Celebrating Mabon doesn't need to be complicated. Magick doesn't always ask for elaborate rituals or elaborate altars. Sometimes, the simplest acts of devotion carry the deepest meaning.
Light a candle and welcome the changing season.
Gather apples, herbs, pumpkins, fallen leaves, acorns, or other treasures from the Earth and place them upon your altar.
Prepare something nourishing from the harvest, and let your kitchen become a sacred space.
Brew yourself a beautiful cup of herbal tea. Bake something with love. Share a meal with the people who make your heart feel at home.
Leave a small, respectful offering of gratitude for Mama Earth, where appropriate, and take a moment to acknowledge everything that has grown, both around you and within you.
You might write down what you are ready to release. You might name the blessings you have received. You might simply sit in the quiet and breathe.
Because sometimes, the greatest magick isn't found in the doing.
It is found in the listening.
The Wheel is turning.
The days are growing shorter. The nights are inviting us inward. The Earth is preparing for rest, and perhaps she is reminding us that we, too, are allowed to slow down.
So gather your harvest, beautiful Witch.
Tend your hearth.
Honor the wisdom of your ancestors.
Give thanks for the lessons, the blessings, the endings, and the beginnings.
And when the darkness arrives, do not be afraid to meet her.
Meet her with an open heart.
Meet her with reverence.
Meet her knowing that even in the stillness, something sacred is taking root.
There is wisdom in the shadows.
There is medicine in the silence.
There is a quieter, deeper kind of magick waiting for those willing to listen.
Blessed Mabon, beautiful souls. πβ¨
May your harvest be abundant.
May your table be surrounded by love.
May your heart be grateful for all that has been.
May you find the courage to release what is no longer yours to carry.
And may your wild, beautiful, witchy spirit trust the wisdom of Mama Earth as she leads us gently into the quiet.
The Wheel turns.
The old season falls away.
The darkness opens her arms.
And we come home to ourselves.
So mote it be. π―οΈπ
